While not an official territory, West Texas is a loosely defined part of the state of Texas in the United States. This area encompasses the steppe climates and desert climates to the west of a line drawn between the cities of Abilene, TX and Del Rio, TX. As of the 2013 census, the total area has an approximate population of more than 1.6 million.
Although there is no official boundary between East and West Texas, most Texans have an understanding of these lines. Within the general are of West Texas, the area is subdivided by physiographic characteristics. These areas include the Trans-Pecos, the Llano Estacado, the Rolling Plains, and the Edwards Plateau subregions.
Because West Texas is not a defined part of Texas, the counties included in the region can vary. According to texascounties.net, West Texas includes 70 counties by definition, based on the five principal metropolitan areas it holds. These areas include: El Paso, Lubbock, Abilene, Midland-Odessa & San Angelo.
